Amateur Radio

I am an amateur radio operator and photographer from Milledgeville, Georgia. I am married to the former Ms. Nikki Gay (K4CNS) of Eatonton and am the son of Quincy (K4QAS) and Donna Simpson of Toomsboro. I was diagnosed with cancer (MDS) in January 2016, leading to becoming a full-time cancer warrior. Prior to that, I was a training specialist, academic advisor, and lecturer at Georgia College & State University. I also was an assistant professor at Georgia Military College. My area of study was American government and public administration.

I was first licensed as Technician Class in 1996. I was heavily involved for several years, joining the Macon Amateur Radio Club, Skywarn, and assisting Charlie McCook (K4YC, SK) with the operation of 145.150 repeater in Ivey, then McIntyre, Georgia. Eventually, school and work got in the way and I backed out of the hobby for a while.

In 2005, my math professor at Georgia Military College (Dr. John Robertson – WJ4SR, SK) discovered I was licensed, and encouraged me to revitalize the W4GMC Amateur Radio Club. I did, and served as its president until I graduated in 2006. After this, I once again became inactive for several years.

After moving in the summer of 2013, I rediscovered my old equipment, and decided to become involved again and begin working towards upgrading to General Class. I passed the Element 3 exam on March 15, 2014.
